Can Hyperbaric Therapy
Help?
We believe that not everyone is a candidate for Hyperbaric
Therapy (HBO) and we believe that HBO is not a “magic bullet” to cure all
ailments. We believe that only careful examination of your own existing
condition will determine if HBOT is correct for you.
Hyperbaric Therapy is not new and has been around for
quite a while so why have you heard more about it?
HBO has been known as a very effective therapy for
certain medical conditions for many years but HBO is not something which
is really known in the medical community. Most of the supporting
literature, as a little as there is, comes originally came from the
professional diving community and military doctors over twenty years ago
or more.
In 1976 , recognizing the need for
meticulous scrutiny of emerging clinical applications of HBO, the Undersea and Hyperbaric
Medical Society UHMS established the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee
(HOTC) which was charged with the responsibility of continuously
reviewing research and clinical data and rendering recommendations
regarding clinical efficacy and safety of HBO.
From the 28 indications covered by third party
reimbursement in 1976 the number of approved indications has been
refined to 13.
Of late there are more medical investigations being
undertaken to prove its effectiveness in a number of new “experimental”
areas which are showing promise. These ‘new” areas include advances in
sports medicine, treatment of stroke patients and correcting anemia in
patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment to achieve
better results.
